Kathleen Newton, the subject of this painting, died of consumption at the age of only twenty-eight. After her death, Tissot returned to Paris where he completed this large painting of Mrs. Newton, Cecil George, Violet and Lilian. Several photos and oil studies of the scene exist. This painting represented a memory of happy hours in the garden at Grove End Road, and Tissot never sold it. The Garden Bench James J.
